Building Roads in Botswana

V A Associates,

Foreign consulting engineering firms located in Botswana have to compete with the growing number of locally owned companies who employ homegrown professionals as a first option.

This is the observation of Jared Mrema, an engineer working for the Gaberone-based VA Associates, a company providing professional Civil Works, Infrastructure, Water and Structural Engineering. The company also offers project management expertise - from feasibility studies to implementation, training and operations.

Jared is a member of both the Botswana and Tanzanian Institutions of Civil Engineers and his work with VA has involved numerous joint venture projects such as the collaboration with Roughton International on the rehabilitation of 71 kilometres of road in Botswana from Mahalapye to Palapye and the widening of roads traversing the villages of Serowe, Palapye, Kanye, and Molepolole.

Joint ventures on infrastructure

"We have also done joint venture work with CPP Botswana which involved detailed design and tender documentation for Goodhope and Tonota villages, covering internal roads and storm water drainage. We were responsible for the roads design, while CPP did the drainage.

"I have been using AllyCAD and Civil Designer for 5 years now and it works very well. I don't use any other software. The updates always come in time and help me a lot."
Prior to his time in Botswana Mrema worked in Tanzania for -M Konsult Ltd, In association with Scott Wilson UK. He was part of the team that carried out feasibility studies and prepared engineering design reports, tender and other contract documents for the rehabilitation of 10 airports across Tanzania.

"I was primarily responsible for three airports; Mwanza, Arusha and Sumbawanga. The work involved topographical surveys, soils and materials investigations, pavement investigations, and detail design of runways, aprons and taxi ways."

Roads design comes out on top

In collaboration with M/S CES of Germany, he was involved in the planning and design of an urban water supply for the towns of Moshi and Arusha in the northern part of Tanzania.

Says Mrema, "I was responsible for the hydraulic analysis and design, preparation of the construction drawings, the bills of quantities and the cost estimates for pumping station.

Whilst his track record on diverse projects reflects his broad range of skills Mrema is quite clear about his passion, saying: "I am a roads engineer first and foremost, and I really enjoy designing roads because that is where my heart lies.
