Louise Le Cordier,
Makanyane Consulting Engineers

Nestled in the heart of Durban, Makanyane Consulting Engineers is bustling with activity. The dream team of this dynamic organization consists of Louise Le Cordier and her two fellow senior partners Akram Khan and Gary Visser. Each member of the team brings a unique set of skills which has created an unmistakable synergy and led to the procurement of high level contracts in short succession.

According to Louise, part of the organization's success lies in their commitment to quality. The company has also invested in infrastructure design software, AllyCAD and Civil Designer to produce their designs. Her experience in the use of the software began in 1996 when as a full time employee of the then Moore Spence Jones (Pty) Ltd, one of her early responsibilities was the digitization of thousands of points in AllyCAD. "I found the program extremely easy to work with and was especially impressed with the seamless exchange of data between AllyCAD and Civil Designer. Our decision to incorporate the software at Makanyane Consulting Engineers was therefore an automatic choice," explains Louise.

Louise matriculated in 1993 and proceeded to complete her Civil Engineering Diploma at the University of Technology in Natal. Her in-service training at Moore Spence Jones (Pty) Ltd was however short lived when Kwezi V3 Engineers merged with the organization to form one company. After a five year stay at Kwezi V3 Engineers, Louise was given the opportunity to practice her skills at Amey Infrastructure Services in the United Kingdom. "Amey is the second biggest infrastructure construction company in the UK and it was a huge compliment to be considered for the position."

It was however during this period that Louise first discovered how strong her SA roots were. "I found the adjustment to be a difficult one, so when Gary Visser contacted me three months later with a proposal to return to South Africa as a partner of the newly formed Makanyane Consulting, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The first two years were extremely challenging and I spent many long hours at the office nurturing client relationships. Since then however, Makanyane Consulting, now four years old, has only grown from strength to strength."
The Simbithi Eco-Estate was one of the first projects that the company was awarded. "The first phase of the project was completed by Kwezi V3 Engineers and comprised of approximately 1000 units, made up of single residential and medium density residential sites linked by a network of internal roads. Makanyane Consulting received the green light for phases 2, 3, and 4, which comprised of a further 434 units designed around an 18 hole executive short course. Although this project was extremely demanding, it was one of the most exciting projects to work on," notes Louise.

Following the successful completion of the Simbithi Eco-Estate, Makanyane Consulting became involved in the Blythedale Coastal Resort. This project involved the design of 30 kilometers of sewer, 4 reservoirs and 10 pump stations within a highly sensitive environmental area. "It is always a pleasure to work on projects where the terrain is so beautiful, and seeing the finished end result gives one a sense of great pride," she says.

Other projects that the organization is currently involved in includes the Zini River Estate in Mtunzini, Stoneford Equestrian Estate in Botha's Hill, the extension to Southgate Industrial Park, as well numerous smaller projects.

According to Louise, being a woman civil engineer and a successful business entrepreneur has been a difficult but rewarding journey. "In many ways, being self-employed is harder. There is no concept of an eight hour day when you first start out. It is also incredibly stressful to maintain good client relations and ensuring that the work produced has zero defects and is of the highest quality. Despite this, it is extremely satisfying knowing that the business is growing because of a committed team. I couldn't imagine myself going back to a routine environment," she says. It is clear that Louise thrives on the multitude of challenges and variety of tasks in her current role.
