"I received my Journeyman’s Machinist trade papers in 1969. Having completed my apprenticeship and not losing any of my digits during the process, I decided I’d never place my fingers in jeopardy again by running a machine for a living. The majority of my work life was spent at various manufacturing companies in middle management roles of one type or another. During this time, I became a Ham radio operator and resurrected the ability to communicate using Morse code that I had learned while serving in the Navy as a Radioman. This hobby introduced me to electronic sending devices called Iambic paddles. I started a collection of these paddles and decided that I could make one of my own. I now have a machine shop set up in my basement for that purpose.
I sketched a paddle design on some scrap paper but had no way to pull it all together. My mechanical drawing skills were never one of my strongest abilities. Having just been introduced to the computer two years earlier, my skills in that area are still blooming too. I searched the web and found five different basic CAD programs. After trying them all, your AllyCAD was the obvious choice. I spent four hours playing with the program. The results were, to me, amazing. I have attached the first drawings of the paddle. They include the assembly drawing and bill of material, two detail drawings and a hole dimension drawing for part of the machining process. Since this initial drawing, I have used the AllyCAD program to re-do my shop layout and numerous projects in metal and wood."
