HELP DEVELOP THE NEW CIVIL & BTECH COURSES

All industry leaders including companies that have supported the Department of Education's initiatives in sustaining quality education have been called to attend the workshop to give input on the shortcomings identified. The workshop will be aimed at building and finalizing the curriculum documents including the outcomes of the National Diploma: Engineering Civil and the B.Tech: Engineering Civil for registration on the NQF through SAQA. KNOWLEDGE BASE COURSE RECEIVES CPD VALIDATION

From 2006, Continual Professional Development (CPD) becomes compulsory for all categories of registration with ECSA including engineers, technologists and technicians. This impacts on engineering professionals specifically because over a five year period, each registered individual must achieve 25 credits in order to retain their professional registration.

The first batch of renewals will be done by ECSA in January 2007 and those registered individuals whose registration is due for renewal will have to earn 5 credits during 2006 in order to successfully maintain their registration in 2007.

If requirements are not met, then professional registration will not be renewed. This has serious implications for the sector as certain work becomes reserved for registered professionals only.

SAICE has confirmed that the Knowledge Base training courses will receive their CPD number later this month and that all courses attended by delegates since January 2006 will receive their backdated points by means of a certificate. All courses along with their associated point value will be listed on the Engineering Council of South Africa's website (www.ecsa.co.za). Once a course has received CPD status, it may be used in all engineering disciplines. For more information please contact (021) 7011850.

MAKING THE DRAWING OFFICE MANAGER WORK FOR YOU

The Drawing Office Manager helps you to track the time spent on a drawing. You can therefore carry on with your normal workload without the added hassle of having to record your hours. The program will perform this function for you and will provide you with an accurate status report.

The Drawing Office Manager is only active once you have checked the "Use Drawing Office Manager" box in the File menu under Save Options - Save Settings. Once active, this function will track the details of each drawing.

DRAWING OFFICE MANAGER

It will record a brief description of the drawing, the name of the draftsperson, the drawing department, the drawing start date and the plot date. In addition, the Entity Statistics button lists the number of primitives, objects and layers in the drawing, allowing you to access detailed information.

Drawings that have been imported from AutoCAD may make use of the 'Block Statistics' button. This option will display statistics about AutoCAD blocks that are hidden within the drawing structure.

You will therefore be able to retrieve accurate information on all your drawings quickly and effectively as the Drawing Office Manager will perform this function in a matter of seconds.
