STELLENBOSCH FACULTY OF ENGINEERING OPEN DAY

Knowledge Base recently attended the Faculty of Engineering Open Day that was held at the University of Stellenbosch. The Open Day was held on Wednesday, 19 April with more than 50 exhibitors and demonstrations.

Kobus du Plessis, lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering and organiser of the open day for the Civil department was extremely pleased with the success of the day: "The event was attended by more than 5000 students who came from all areas, some coming from as far as Springbok" he explained.

In the spectacular water laboratory of Civil Engineering actual water problems concerning rivers and dams were simulated by means of models, allowing students to gain practical knowledge on real problems. The event was also attended by industry speakers who shared information on current issues.

The work of engineers plays an indispensable role in everyday life. To make people aware of Engineering as a career, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch aims to promote Engineering initiatives by means of events like the ever popular Open Day. Knowledge Base will continue to support these events as part of our ongoing commitment to civil engineering.

EXPLORING FILL GEOMETRY

The Fill Geometry in AllyCAD allows you to trace over different types of geometry elements whether they are lines, circles or arcs, without having to change the draw mode or snap function. To access this function, simply select 'Draw' in the menu bar and then choose the 'Geometry Trace Over' function.

The program will prompt you to indicate the intersection point. Once you have selected the element that you would like to trace over the program will request the end intersection point before tracing the elements selected.

FILL GEOMETRY

In addition to the 'Fill Geom' function, there is also the 'Fill Geom Circle' and the 'Fill Geom Arc'. To trace a geometry circle, the program prompts you to indicate which geometry circle needs to be filled. Once you have specified the circle, it will be traced with a single click of a button.

The 'Fill Geom Arc' works in a similar fashion. This function prompts the user to indicate the first point, then any position on the arc, and finally the end arc point. It then proceeds to trace the arc without having to change draw modes.

All three functions work intuitively and naturally, allowing you to save valuable time when completing your projects.

Challenging Data

"The draughtsmen of today have it all too easy. I started draughting when I was eighteen years old and back then everything was done by hand under the watchful eye of our relentless teachers. Each line had to be drawn with painful precision and because it was all done by hand it was very frustrating. That was the price you had to pay to become a draughtsman," says Gail Claydon, GIS Information Analyst at Buffalo City Municipality. read more
