KNOWLEDGE BASE EXHIBITS AT THE CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF
TECHNOLOGY (CPUT)
The annual Graduate Fair of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology will be held on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 September at the Major Sports Hall (Bellville Campus). We will be exhibiting at this year's fair and will be showcasing our AllyCAD and Civil Designer software to students who wish to pursue a career in design.
As part of our ongoing social responsibility programme, we will be donating copies of the AllyCAD student version to the campus library. This will allow students who do not have access to the Internet to access the program for educational purposes. We have also recently become one of the companies that offer co-operative placement in the civil engineering field. Students have since been interviewed for 2005.

GEOMETRY AND CONSTRUCTION LINES IN ALLYCAD
Geometry lines are a superset of construction
lines. They allow you to define the layout, position lines and
arcs tangential to each other and defines the basic layout of the
drawing elements. You can therefore simply fill in with solid
lines to create the objects.
With AllyCAD’s construction lines you can resolve the layout and
details of the drawing in your mind and on the screen as you go
along. In addition, the useful geometry lines allow you to draw
the way you would draw naturally.
|
Geometry & Construction lines
|
Geometry has the following properties:
-
It has no end points and continues into
infinity.
-
It is not printed or plotted.
-
It is common to all layers.
There are also many geometric constructions
available:
-
Intersecting horizontal and vertical geometry
lines (cross).
-
Line at a defined angle.
-
Line through two points.
-
Line parallel to an existing line or circle.
-
Circle.
-
Up to five concentric circles.
-
Circle tangent to two lines.
-
Circle tangent to a line and a circle.
-
Circle tangent to two circles.
-
Circle tangent to three lines.
-
Circle through a point and tangent to a line.
-
Circle through a point and tangent to a
circle.
-
Circle through three points.
-
Line tangent to a circle.
-
Line tangent to two circles.
-
Line that is a perpendicular bisector of two
points or a line.
The Geometry menu is versatile and easy to
use with loads of functionality. You can project solid lines and
arcs to geometry lines and circles by making use of the ‘Make
Geometry’ function. This duplicating function is especially useful
for projecting lines into another part of the drawing, or for
finding the intersection between projected lines and arcs.
Geometry may also be deleted or may be switched on or off at will.
To switch geometry off, go to the Settings Menu and select ‘Show
Geometry’ under ‘View Settings’. The message Don’t Draw Geometry’
will appear briefly on the screen. You can switch it on again by
selecting ‘Geometry - Geometry On/Off’. The message ‘Draw
Geometry’ will appear briefly on the screen. To delete geometry,
go to ‘Geometry EI’ to delete a single geometry line or circle or
go to ‘Delete All Geometry’ to delete all the geometry. Once you
have deleted your geometry, the action is permanent and the
information cannot be restored.
When you save your drawing, the geometry is not automatically
stored. In order to set it so that your geometry automatically
stores with each save, go to ‘File – Save Options’ and check the
‘Save Geometry’ box in the ‘Save Settings’ option before saving.
Once this option has been checked, your geometry will be saved in
a file with the same name as your drawing, but the extension will
show .geo instead of .drg. Alternatively, you can save your
geometry using the ‘File – Save Options – Save Geometry’ option.
Geometry is represented by construction lines and circles which
can be used as guide lines for tracing over, for determining the
positions of points, for determining line and arc intersection
points and for projecting existing lines to another part of the
drawing. Geometry entities are therefore necessary to allow for
the precise layout of complex shapes quickly and effectively.
