DIMENSIONS IN ALLYCAD
Moving dimension text
Moving
dimension text is easy in AllyCAD. Simply select the dimension
by dragging a selection box around it with your cursor, or by
using the ‘Edit – Select by Polygon’ function. Once the
dimension has been selected, you may switch into ‘Node Mode’ by
clicking on the Nodes icon in the Toolbar.
Three
nodes will now appear on the dimension, one at each of the
dimensioned points and one at the dimension text position. The
dimension text position will become black or highlighted when
you clock on the node at the dimension text position.
The
highlighted node will allow you to accurately nudge it to a new
position by simply pressing the arrow key pointing in the
direction you would like to move the node to.
The
program will now prompt you to specify how far you would like to
move the text. Type a distance and press ‘Enter’. The dimension
text will be moved up by the amount specified and the witness
lines will be adjusted accordingly. You can also move the text
by dragging the highlighted node to a new position.
To
centre dimension text
Dimension text may not be centred due to trailing blanks and
dimensions that are centred on a tolerance sign. To trail
blanks, use the ‘Edit Dimension Properties’ command in the
‘Annotate – Edit Dimensions’ menu to edit the dimension text.
Once the text appears in the Control Bar you can ensure that
there are no blanks before or after it.
Mechanical dimensions such as 34 +/-2 are centred on the
tolerance sign (plus or minus). This may make the dimension
appear off centre in certain cases. To correct this, use the
‘Modify – Stretch’ function to move the dimension text for quick
and easy adjusting.
There
are so many other options that may be illustrated to maximise
your use of dimensions. Watch this space for more information on
this feature in the upcoming AllyCAD newsletters.

SOLVING THE
FLAT EARTH CONUNDRUM
Doug Horton
said that the art of simplicity is a puzzle of complexity. Take
a simple piece of flat earth like Botswana, and try and solve
the complex puzzle of making water run - in any direction.
Richard Laborn relishes solving these problems, which he faces
daily.
