AllyCAD TECH TIP

Drawing Ellipses

This Tech Tip explains how to draw an ellipse.

An ellipse may be drawn in two ways:

  • Using the major axis and an aspect ratio
  • Using a radius

This Tech Tip is also demonstrated via a short tutorial video clip. Click here to view the tutorial.

Using the Major Axis

To draw the ellipse using the major axis and an aspect ratio, firstly ensure that the Isometric Grids option is unchecked in the Drawing settings.

Settings > Drawing Settings

Draw > Ellipses > Ellipse

Enter on the centre point where you would like the ellipse positioned.

Type in the distance of the major axis and click the Done icon.

Type in the aspect ratio followed by a space and then the angle you require the ellipse rotated to. Click the Done icon and the ellipse is inserted.

Using a Radius

Ensure the Isometric Grids option is checked in the Drawing Settings.

Settings > Drawing Settings

Draw > Ellipses > Ellipse

Enter on the centre point where you would like the ellipse positioned.

Type in the radius of the ellipse and click the Done icon. The ellipse is inserted.

The ellipse by radius may be drawn at various angles by locking the Keyboard angle. Locking the Keyboard angle to 30° will allow you to draw the Isometric circle. Press the Full stop button on the keyboard to change the lock angle between 30°, 330° and 90°.
